Exhibition Private View

Saturday 4th June 6.009.00PM

Nice to see Nathan with some clothes on...

The students have got a small shop. Here's Samm (21) giving Mr. Jim (33) the 'hard sell'.

Judging by their futuristic eye-wear  this couple must be from the future. Dave (33) is zooming in to check if they are kindred spirits or simply 1950's throwbacks.

Boys will be boys...

 Baxter & Byrne.

The Blackpool massive.

From the class of 2015 and now with a successful freelance career, Mr Jake Clarke (33).

From the class of 2003 Ms. Lynn 'Miss' Greaves and Patrick Bjorkman (both 33). Lynn is one of the country's best art teachers (she don't take no lip from da kids...) and Patrick is a top creative at Equator.

Lock up your daughters! Here are Nick Dodds and Edwin Burrow, both 33 and both hep to the jive daddy-o!

The Queen of Papcastle, Zoe Garnett-Scott (33) and new P.A. Mr. Ben Pinkney (21).

PLEASE REMEMBER: The exhibition is open to the public Monday 6 – Friday 10 June, from 10.00am – 4.00pm daily.

Instagram, etc.

For the last couple of weeks, 3rd year graphic design and illustration students (all 21) have been busting their humps producing an exhibition "grillustetc." and all of the other stuff that goes alongside it.

There's a good record of their efforts on their Instagram site here so cut along there now and have a look...

Back in the box Fido!

Come final assessment time we're usually wise to any ploys to try and 'secure a better grade' - these 'persuaders' usually come a suitably tangible and tasty form like, for example, meat pies.  However, the bar has now been raised by our very own Shona Lett (21), who really pushed the boat out this year. Well, more accurately, she pushed this cute™puppy into a box for us to open the following week.

The little chap was still chipper after his ordeal and really perked up in the loving hands of 'Uncles' Tony and Dwayne (both 33).

*No puppies were harmed in the production of this blog post. It took ages for Tony and Dwayne to clam down after we took it away from them though.

The End of Year Exhibition is Nearly Upon Us

The smell of fresh emulsion paint combined with the sound of distant hammering can mean only one thing here at Grillust towers - it must be time for the end of year exhibition!

The private view will be held on Saturday 4 June, 6.009.00PM at the Brampton Road Campus, Carlisle CA3 9AY.

Afterwards the exhibition is open from Monday 6 – Friday 10 June, from 10.00am – 4.00pm daily. Entrance is free and everyone is welcome.

You can read more about the various arts courses exhibiting here.

The Graphic Design and Illustration students have also been busy creating their own 'ETC' exhibition website here. It showcases all of our year three students' work and contains links to their personal websites.

Here's a sneaky peak of what's been going on in the studio combined with a sample of the many posters designed by the students for their 'ETC' exhibition.

Hope to see you on Saturday.

Stress Busters

Final year graphic design and illustration students across the land will be experiencing hyper-tension about the prospect of leaving the comfortable, protective womb of University life. Well, all except for our Liam (21), who just doesn't do stress.

Liam Robinson (21). This is the closest he's ever been to 'stressed-out'!
There are several commercially available stress busting 'toys' available for the neurotics out there...

...but nothing really suited to the Grillust™ fraternity. Until now!

When the folks at Poster Project challenged students to design a poster around the word 'stress', 3rd year students Katie Lock (21), Vincent Walden (21) and Maddy Mould (21) responded with a poster that stress-heads can all get behind, or more accurately tear-up.

As Poster Project (run by Glasgow design agency Front Page®) said, "We were overwhelmed – physically and emotionally – with the response, so much so we had to extend the number of winners from three to five. We had entries from Estonia to Chile, and loads of points in between, and in the end – after much deliberation – we had our winners"... which included the entry by our very own Lock, Walden & Mould (still all 21)

And here it is...

In recognition of their efforts, Lock, Walden & Mould will be winging their way up to Glasgow to receive a bumper bag of Sherbet Lemons and attend a celebratory slap-up feed at the town hall.

The rest of us are staying in Carlisle, tearing up bits of paper.

Jake Parker
Illustrator
thinker
guru

Jake Parker is an American illustrator who has worked in a broad variety of areas - video games, animation, comics, books, film and more.
He's also the originator of the inktober movement that comes around once a year (can you guess when?)

Jake's work is primarily in the fantasy / comic book genre but the scope of his philosophy and teaching goes much further.

The most impressive thing about Jake (beside his prolific output) is his attitude toward illustration, drawing and sharing his experiences and learning. He posts a multitude of videos on Youtube that are jam packed with great, hard-won insight, offering a fantastic helping hand to anyone interested in illustration - no matter what area they want to get into. It doesn't matter if you want to be just like Jake or if you want to get busy with a completely different thing; the insight is still priceless.

Here's a couple of Jake's videos that we enjoyed and there's plenty more here

Penguin Book Cover Awards

The Penguin Book Cover Design competition attracts thousands of entries from students worldwide. And, to be shortlisted is a real recognition of talent and skill. In the children's book section this year, students were asked to design a new cover for Emil and the Detectives to bring this classic to a new generation of readers.

Third year illustration student, Maddy Mould (21), duly obliged with the finely conceived and crafted cover design shown below. Today we are cock-a-hoop to learn that Maddy's entry has been shortlisted. The winners are unveiled on June 22nd and the Grillust digits are crossed that Maddy scoops the top prize. In the meantime, being shortlisted is no mean feat; well done Maddy!

You can see more of Maddy' work here - http://maddymould.com

Size Does Matter!

Third year illustrator, Samm Barnes (21), has been doing some large scale cutting out. And, when you're slicing up the big stuff an A2 cutting mat just doesn't, well, cut it! Samm was resourceful enough to track down an outsize, A0 cutting mat, presumably a sales prop, but then, where's the 4 x larger than life scalpel?

Grillust™Senior Managers, Tony Peart (33) and David Robert (33) were clearly excited by this giant mat and raced about the studio like a pair of over stimulated baboons before being coaxed down from their 'play nest' in the ceiling joists.

Rumpus time over and suitably calm, Tony (right) finds he is keen to field an expedition to look for previously undiscovered tribal groups, plant based miracle cures, un-extinct dinosaurs or lost artworks by Christopher Voysey. Meanwhile, David (left) 'marks-out' for a game of Subutteo.

Subutteo Leeds United hotshot Billy Bremner (above) remains, as usual, tight lipped! Probably because he's made of plastic.

Brown is the new Green

GREEN SCREEN is the largest international nature film festival in Germany. And, when GREEN SCREEN put out a call for poster designs to launch their 10th Nature Film Festival in 2016, 3rd year Graphic Design Student, Megan Brown (21), decided to pitch in with a proposal.

This week we've learned that Megan's design has been shortlisted and we now await the news that her winning poster has been selected by a jury and the 1200 Euros prize money is on the way to Grillust™ Towers.
