We was robbed!

Regular readers will know that earlier in the year, 2nd year graphic design student Sam Mallard's beer can designs (below) were selected for production by our friends, Eden River Brew Co. a continuing partnership that's brought several can designs to the craft beer market.

Recently, we were delighted to learn that Sam's designs were placed second in the standard label category by The Labologists Society - The International Society of Label Collectors.

2nd place!!! ... to use footballers parlance, "we was robbed!"

Since Eden River Brew Co. introduced the beers in June 2018, these special craft brews have sold out! A testament to the quality of the beers and the shelf appeal of Sam's labels.

Lett's Diary

Yesterday, 2016 graphic design graduate Shona Lett (33), popped in to Grillust™Towers to show us a little green book; the Favourite Design 2016 Annual...

...and what a bumper edition it is too, with Shona featured not once, but twice in its hallowed pages.

You can find more of Shona's work at www.shonalett.co.uk

Shona's Coffee Addiction

3rd Year graphic designer, Shona Lett (21), has been generating some blog attention recently with her bold 'Bold' coffee packaging.

And it's no wonder she's getting attention, for as every Grillustasi knows, a damn fine cup of coffee is an essential adjunct to a designer's process. So, what better way to attract the attention of caffeine starved creatives than with packaging for their favourite beverage? She's smart, our Shona!

Her work has so far been featured on two industry blogs Packaging of the World and Favourite Design

Shona's currently developing some packaging for the eco-conscious consumer, more of which later. In the meantime, you can see more of Shona's work on her website here

2nd YEAR, 1st PROJECT

Over the summer, our new second year students were asked to document their passions, other than design or illustration. On returning to University students were tasked with developing visually arresting editorial spreads using that research.  Here are just a few examples...

FEELING GOOD :-)

You might remember that one of last year's super-star Grillust™ graduates, Rachy McKenzie (33), was a worthy winner in the 2012 YCN design briefs, with some juicy typography she created for a Feel Good drinks campaign.

The fruity folk at Feel Good liked her approach that much, they've been working with Rachy over the past year to develop the campaign which is now live across the UK...

Second year book project

As reported earlier on the blog, second year graphic designers have teamed up with our photography students to produce books of their images. As we approach the deadline a heightened sense of urgency has gripped the studio with photographers and graphic designers huddled conspiratorially around the Macs. Initial results look promising...

Jade Davies' book 'Passing By' designed and produced by Katy Hill (21)

Ami Swift (21) works with photographer Mark Johnston (21) whilst openly coveting his Sesame Street pencil case.

Amateur magician Chris Bell (21) makes another image disappear from the page. Move over, Tommy Cooper!

C-ART AT TULLIE HOUSE

3rd Year Illustration student, Jade Wall, recently collaborated with our good friends at C-Art and Tullie House to produce evocative publicity material for an evening of illustrated talks with seven of the artists featuring in the C-Art exhibition. The real trick was to feature the work of seven very different visual artists without giving prominence to any one of them - after all, it would only end in tears!

All design, print and finishing was organised and overseen by Jade who also used her own photographs as backdrops for posters and postcards. She also had the presence of mind to 'requisition' first and second year students to do the folding.

Specific Gravity and the Fez

This week 2nd Year graphic design students have teamed up with their BA Photography counterparts to begin the design and production of photographic books.

Grillust™ operative, Jim (33), was almost sick with excitement when he heard that Dr John would be attending the briefing. Imagine his disappointment when he found out it was only our own Dr John Darwell (33), merely a photography lecturer and not an international jazz/blues personality.

A thorough project briefing requires the use of a Fez. You heard it here first.
Normally we'd pair up students using the internationally understood 'playground football team selection rules', but as we had a Fez we opted for the preferred alternative. The well-drilled graphics students had no difficulty in arranging themselves by height as required by the rules but, again, the photographers made a right hash of lining up in alphabetical order despite their firm assertion that "we can do this!".

Dr John (being an academic Dr) whipped out his slide rule and worked out that this is because the photography students are a lighter specific gravity than graphics students – one graphics student is equal to 1.95 photography students. Paradoxically, they are not as dense as graphic design students on an atomic level, allowing both common sense and alphabetical prowess to leak out all over the place.

Dr John Darwell (right) is congratulated on his discovery of the student specific gravity factor (SSG)
A quick game of British Bulldogs soon had the students divided into the exact ratio 1 to 1.95,  and they quickly set about sizing each other up for the task ahead.

C-Art at Tullie House

3rd year students Ben Walton, Jade Wall, Ieva Bureikaite, Mark Collins and Stephanie Stillwell (all 21) have been working on publicity for a Pecha Kucha event at Tullie House on the 7th February featuring seven C-Art artists - Mark Gibbs, Maggie Toner-Edgar, Christine Hurford, Caroline Dalton, Ian Wright, Stephanie Leighton and Sarah Tew (all 33)

Today was presentation day where the students presented their designs to Mark and Maggie. It was an informal and fun experience with the students benefiting from some immediate, encouraging feedback. Jade's design was chosen and is now moving into production.

That's our boy...

Proving that he is not a 'token Salopian', James Bradley (21) is vying for the "Student-from-Shropshire-most-featured-on-Blogs" Award, currently held by our own Gary (The Shrewsbury Biscuit) Nicholson (33).

James features as today's inspiration on the Business Boom Collective. And, it's also great to know that James is enjoying his time with us here in Carlisle.

Graphic Design Student James Bradley

Graphic designer and student of the University of Cumbria James Bradley provides the inspiration this afternoon. Currently in his third year, the print and typography-enthusiast is concentrating on building up his portfolio and experience before entering the industry this summer.
“I have always been obsessed with information, stories and making things since I was very young, so design and myself are a great match. I love my degree and people always ask me why I came to Carlisle. Its simple because of the fantastic course, with its interesting tutors along with its fast pace structure that has made me a better designer but also better person.”

Graphic Design on the Go-go!

Year 3, Graphic Design student Steph Stilwell (21) was recently featured in Cumbria’s very own quality broadsheet newspaper, The Cumberland News (see photo below):

The article celebrated Steph (21) being judged the worthy winner of a ‘live brief’ to design an identity for a new, mobile Pad Thai, stir-fry business run by local entrepreneurs Alan and May Bell (both 33).

It is not clear yet if Steph (21) will be involved in Alan’s next venture into ‘cyber’ street food, something he calls ‘iPad Thai’ - far-eastern delicacies served on mobile devices.

Steph (21) has featured on the Blog before and is well overdue a fast-facts feature; a situation we will rectify with immediate effect:

Ms. Stephanie Stilwell (21) - A Fast Facts Feature

Fast Fact 1.
Steph (21) hails from England’s smallest county, Rutland (pop. 37,600) and is Rutland’s fouth most famous export after: No.1 - Rutland Water (sparkling or still), No. 2 - Rutland Weekend Television and No 3. The Rutles

Fast Fact 2.
Steph (21) came to study with us because she suffers from Topographobia - an allergy to the flat, wide-open landscape of her native county. She now finds inspiration, comfort and solace in the dramatic, mountainous vistas of Cumbria. Incidentally, since moving up to Cumbria, Steph (21) grown a good 18" taller simply because of the constant exposure to a proper three-dimensional environment.

Fast Fact 3.
Steph (21) has an ambition to become the world’s first, specialist designer of identities for van-based businesses. To date she has created fantastic work for the following:

Veals on Wheels (
unethical gourmet burgers)
We Deliver Liver (butcher)

Duck Tuck (Fowl based snack food)
Pitta Express (delicious Mediterranean flat breads)
Door to Door (Front Door delivery and installation service)
Hasty Pastry (Choux, Phyllo, Puff etc. - for all your emergency baking needs)
Pronto Pint (a vast range of quick beers)

The PanVanMan - (kitchenware, cutlery and doily essentials)

Fast Fact 4.
In October 2013, Steph (21) will become Steph (22), but in July she'll officially be Steph (33)!

Fast Fact 5.
Despite her foray into snack van territory, Steph (currently 21) is so posh she spurns Cup-a-Soup.

You can see more of her winning 'mobile' work below, but please note, Steph (21) is a woman of many talents and also has a wide range of 'stationary' designs on her website here.

Type tricks

The other morning we presented our 3rd year students a range of display 'faces, a number of complicated rules and a very tight deadline (measured in hours, not days); and then we encouraged them to indulge in some speculative play.
They are a talented bunch so it was difficult to decide what to show you, but here are just some of the highlights...

bikes and wine

We are now, indisputably, the course of choice for a healthier lifestyle
  1. We have worked with the Ulverston WalkFest for their branding of the 2013 festival (winning design by Toby Garland)
  2. Live illustration brief with “Singletrack” a life-style bible cleverly masquerading as a cycling magazine (winning and printed illustration by Tom Softly)
  3. Branding for the inaugural Muckle Toon Adventure Festival – an all running/mountain biking/walking/cycling festival in Langholm
  4. Dwayne Bell published work over the last year in Singletrack/The Ride Journal/Cycle Sport/Cycle Week/Cycle ActiveGrace Neal (Yr3 2011-12) secured permanent designer post at Singletrack
  5. Louise Hubbard illustration featured in Singletrack magazine very soon
However we feel that our students need to somehow find a balance to all these physical jerks...

DRINK!
...so here are some examples of the re-branding we have just done for the Swallow Hill vineyard in sunny South Africa – with its Cumbrian connections, it's our wine of choice...
