C-Art at Tullie House

3rd year students Ben Walton, Jade Wall, Ieva Bureikaite, Mark Collins and Stephanie Stillwell (all 21) have been working on publicity for a Pecha Kucha event at Tullie House on the 7th February featuring seven C-Art artists - Mark Gibbs, Maggie Toner-Edgar, Christine Hurford, Caroline Dalton, Ian Wright, Stephanie Leighton and Sarah Tew (all 33)

Today was presentation day where the students presented their designs to Mark and Maggie. It was an informal and fun experience with the students benefiting from some immediate, encouraging feedback. Jade's design was chosen and is now moving into production.

Monographs

Our eager and talented 3rd year graphic designers and illustrators have just finished their first project after the summer vacation. Asked to respond to a given word and produce a printed monograph, they approached the project in their usual inventive and exploratory manner. Here are just some of the highlights from a really varied, creative and carefully produced set of projects...

Tom softley Singletrack magazine

Singletrack is an independently run, UK based Mountain Bike magazine. Recently their design team (Sim Mainey) instigated a design overhaul. The covers are now super simple and clean, and I think you'll agree, this makes a very pleasant change to our design aware eyes.
We were approached by Sim with an illustration brief which was given to all 2nd and 3rd year illustrators. Yr 3 student, Tom Softley's (21), piece was selected for it's humour and humanity. The issue is out tomorrow but this Grillust operative got a sneak peek (he subscribes to the mag).

Well done Tom on a great piece and well done Sim on a gorgeous magazine that chooses quality over trend. 

Degrees of Sticky

Each student receives a different subject and is then asked to create a scale of difference exploiting both words and images, developing their ideas into a final A3 design.

The project is all about having opinions and being clear about what you want to say. Like good observational comedy it is also about creatively exploiting 'truths'.

illustrators tackle issuu

Here at Grillust towers we strive to have one foot in the future at all times - t'other is firmly in the past, grumbling about prices and the despicable lack of letraset in the local John Menzies; anyway, I digress. As part of our headlong charge toward the future we have all become quite fond of issuu. Yr 2 illustrators recently got jiggy with it (issuu that is) and here are some of the results...

When commissions cometh

Third year illustrator Jenny Cox (jumble enthusiast) recently completed this commission for Claire Market Review (London School of Economics, Student journal), an editorial piece on the pressure to conform to gay stereotypes after coming out.

Year 3 illustrator Elly Carthy (animal fanatic) recently completed these two illustrations (shown with details) for the nus's monthly magazine after they put a call out for illustration talent.
"They wanted illustration talent. I am illustration talent." She very well might have said (but didn't).

Grillust helmsman and on-line adventurer, Simon Davies (33) recently met and fell deeply in love with issuu.
Issuu is a site which allows you to upload pdf files and view them in a magazine like format; you can also peruse everyone else's uploaded content - cross referenced and catogorised to help you find what yer after - and embed folios wherever your wee heart desires.

Tigerprint packaging competition Claire Wood Runner up

For the second year in a row, one of our students is enjoying the taste of sweet success via Tigerprint. Claire Wood, yr3 illustration, recently received a top ten placement AND a runners up prize with the above packaging designs.

The brief was 'To investigate how a special occasion can be enhanced through the redesign of an envelope or gift packaging.'

The box (top) received the runner's up prize and this is what the judges had to say - "A gorgeous entry by Claire and very commercial. The judges felt this concept would translate well across our different categories."
