Year One, Third Project

An Introduction to Animation

Here's a small selection of work produced by our plucky first year students during a two week, intensive introduction to the wonderful world of creative animation:

Storyboard Concept by James Cook and Edward Hanley (both 21)...

...and here's the finished animation

There wasn't a specific outcome required, the students were simply asked to explore ways of making the inanimate move. What you will see below covers a rich tapestry of mood, emotion and scenario. There's even the heartwarming love story of a potato and a tomato. Enjoy...

Macs Have Many Uses

No.1 in an occasional series...

Who needs a cheap and cheerful cork pin board when you have a thousand pound's worth of Apple Mac sitting just in front of you?

Graduation 2014

The day was a little overcast with light rain but that didn't dampen the spirits of the Grillust™ students (now all 33) when they graduated earlier today.

Here are the photos from the family album:

'Big Jim' Millington, the Mayor's wheelman.

Henry VIII (wives not pictured).

'Little and Large' (the archbish' and JVLB).

We managed to line up a small selection of our graduates in front of a wall...

...for the 'money shot'.

The afterparty.

Luci and Dom having just consumed their complementary glass of wine (Blue Nun).

Man love!

The Grillust™ team wish all our graduates every success for the future and please remember to keep in touch.

Design Your Future Manchester 2014

We're just back from the two-day UCAS Art & Design event held at the Convention Centre, Manchester.

It was a very busy two days for 'Team Cumbria'. We met lots of interesting people (hello), answered lots of questions and gave out lots of prospectuses and leaflets to interested students (and their tutors).

The only disappointment was the lack of free rubbish this year. Normally you can't move for USB pens, frisbees, pencil sharpeners, 30/60 set squares, rubbers, tote bags, popcorn etc.

This year, it was clear that the cold wind of austerity had finally arrived at DYF with the freebees reduced to a motley selection of bags and pens. However, we can happily report that it remains impossible for anything living to walk past Nottingham Trent's stand without coming away with a black shoulder bag. They remain the undisputed Higher Education champions of giving away bags to strangers...

Here are a few photos from across the two days:

'Team Cumbria' 9.55 day one. From left to right: Robbie, Marty, Mikey, Giuliana and Julia.

Busy, busy, busy...

Giuliana explains quantum mechanics to two interested passers by.

'The Prof', evening day one. We once again adjourned to the pub with the 'wall of crisps'.

Sadly no, it's in the bin (unfortunately there's a lot of 'waste' at DYF).

We were a little concerned that the 'Doncaster crew' might not be able to find their way home.

This was the largest 'fashion watch' we saw across the two days.

Design Magazine

These aren't images from a new collection of midcentury magazine design, rather they're examples from our recently uncovered collection of 'Design' magazine. Design was an industrial design magazine and our library has a collection ranging from 1961 - 1990; due to the recent upscaling of the library space, these archived magazines have been brought out of storage. It's easy to loose yourself in the thousands of pages containing stunning editorial layout, gorgeous photography and jaw dropping illustration. We wholeheartedly encourage you to go and do exactly that.

Grillust randoms

Queen of Type, Rhiannon Robinson (33) demonstrates a mock-up of one of her many planned tattoos.

Tash Gale (21, right) with great embarrassment, showing the results of washing her feedback form on too hot a setting. Bronte Taylor (21, left) smugly get's it right (40° delicates).

Canteen Crack. Second to our world famous Apple Crumble the biggest treat that daily canteen visits offer, is the fantastic array of butt crack randomly on display. Nothing helps a tuna roll go down quite like it.

To ease the transition from School to University, the first years receive a half hour story-time every afternoon. Here, Long Dave Silver Roberts (33) enraptures and delights with his heartfelt retelling of Treasure Island. He does all the voices and everything.

Not sure what's happening here but look how happy it's making Dave. Look, look at his little face, all lit up.

Wicker Hut Watch - Week 2

Return of The Shedi

Day 14

Q: Is the Wicker Hut still there?

A: Yes it is and it's found some new friends...

A long time ago on a campus far, far away...

Sorry Pete we lied...

Have fun with drawing, explore mark making and materials. Don’t confuse ‘photo realism’ with good drawing. A drawing doesn’t have to look like it’s subject. A drawing can ‘feel’ like it’s subject. It might just be a really juicy drawing. Is it possible that if an artist has fun working on something then a sense of fun can be passed on to the viewer?
