Yes it does look like a still from Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind but this is actually Bitts Park, Carlisle earlier this evening.
A perfect afternoon; sun, clear blue sky and no wind gave way to a perfect evening for... fog.
Over 35,000 people made the annual pilgrimage to an event that ranks in the top ten of fireworks displays nationally.
As usual the hugely elaborate bonfire was the first to be lit, in retrospect this was probably a mistake as it turned a thin mist into quite an opaque fog. Still it was very atmospheric and the fog did change colour with great regularity as thousands of pounds worth of pyrotechnics went off unseen in the sky above.
I thought it was all a very elaborate and rather funny joke. Get thousands of families and friends out into the freezing cold, muddy park (people don't like muddy trainers) then burn the olympics and set of most of the councils entertainment budget in explosives right in front of people, but not let them see. NOTHING funnier that disappointed kids and stressed parents. Treat.
